Games in Full Swing

The primary school ball-games are in full swing.  It has been a fun ride so far, but is about to get very competitive.  Our CGA team managed to win the base.  After combining with the other local schools we went on to win the zonal tournament, and on Friday our zone captured the district championship for the third consecutive year.  Now we have selected the best players from the district to play in the Regional Tournament in Homa Bay starting on Monday (April 2nd).  Our teams haven’t been as strong as last year where we were pumping in a lot of goals, but we still have managed to win every match, though some have come down to post match penalty shootouts.  Fortunately we have one of the best goalkeepers I have ever seen against penalty shots.  We have controlled all of the games, but just haven’t managed to score many goals.  Most of our best players from the past couple of years have moved on to secondary school (which is a good thing) so we are left with some players who are good, but not great, and then we also have a strong group of young girls.  In fact most of our best players are young and small.  The fans really enjoy watching those little ones running all over the field displaying their skills.

We will be playing in the Regionals on Monday and Tuesday in Homa Bay, and then selecting the best players to move on to Provencals on Thursday and Friday in Rongo.  From there they will select the best players in the province to move on to Nationals in Mombasa at the Kenyan Coast.  The past five years we have always had around 4-5 players from our club selected to participate in Nationals and we hope with success that we will again get that opportunity.  Last year five Suba Lakers helped the Nyanza Province team reach the National Finals where they lost 1-0 to the defending champs.  Four of those five Lakers have now moved on to secondary school so it is time for the younger ones to step up.
